Valves have come back into fashion in the hi-fi community. Classic, and new, "tube" designs command very high prices, and audiophile experts recognize a sonic quality unobtainable with even the best quality Class A solid state amplifiers. Yet a few decades ago valves were on their way out, and all the major European and American manufacturers had ditched their valve-making equipment. What happened? Why are valves so sought-after now? What valves (and vintage radios, and high fidelity equipment) are collectable, and why? What sort of valve amplifier should I be looking for, and where can I can find help building or restoring one?
